THOMy C. DIRNHOFER

CINEMATOGRAPHER / DIRECTOR

Thomas Dirnhofer is a enthusiastic storyteller, cinematographer, and director known for his versatility across genres since the late 1990s. He has worked on numerous commercials and music videos, collaborating frequently with Co-director Philipp Kadelbach under the pseudonym "Begbie" to produce nearly 300 advertising films for major brands.

From 2010 to 2013, Dirnhofer documented climber David Lama for Red Bull Media House, culminating in the award-winning documentary "Cerro Torre - a snowball’s change in hell." He also directed mini-biopics for Autostadt in 2014, utilizing advanced filming technolog for then on elf the largest LED screen in Euro.

In 2018, he worked as a cinematographer on the film "So viel Zeit" (Dir. Philipp Kadelbach) and the documentary "Song of an Unknown Actress." (Dir: Pet&Flo)

Dirnhofer contributed as a 2nd Unit Director/DoP for Fox Searchlight's "Downhill," (starring Will Ferrell and Julia Louis Dreyfus) and captured Eliud Kipchoge's historic marathon under two hours, resulting in the documentary "Kipchoge: The Last Milestone." (Dir: Jake Scott)

In 2021, he contributed as a 2nd Unit Director/DoP to the film "House of Gucci" Dir.: Ridley Scott and in 2022, collaborated with Director Jochen Alexander Freydank on "Riesending - Every Hour Counts."

In 2023 he worked as cinematographer on the Austrian TV - production “2 gegen die Bank” Dir.: Clara Stern

Besides his work for feature productions, Thomas loves to create buzzing Ads and has recently started to create brand experiences for small selected start-up companies.

2022

RIESENDING - jede Stunde zählt This two-part eventmovie for german television is based on the true story of the experienced caver Josef Häberle, who’s injured after a life threatening accident 2000m deep in the so-called “Riesending” cave. This is Thomas’ first collaboration with the german director and Academy Award Winner („Toyland“) Jochen Alexander Freydank.

2021

The Fisherman’s daughter. In this short a young women is waking up on her birthday in New York City. As she can’t reach out for her dad by phone, she get’s carried away by her childhood memories back home in Portugal growing up in an old fishing town at the atlantic coast. The longer the day lasts, the more she fears, that something might have happened to her dad out at sea.

2019

When attempting to run the first marathon under two hours in Oct 2019 in Vienna, Thomas was collaborating with Director Jake Scott on „KIPCHOGE - The last milestone“ in which some of the most distinctive endurance athletes of our times take their appearance. After the large scale production in Vienna, Jake and Thomas shot with a much smaller documentary crew for 3 weeks in Kenya around Eliud Kipchoge’s home in Eldoret to get a deeper insight in the life and attitude of this exceptional athlete.

In the winter 2018/19 Thomas was hired as 2nd unit Director / Dop for Fox Searchlights production “Downhill” directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. Thomas was able to contribute a big portion of on location shots for Ruben Oestlund remake of his independent hit “Force mayeure”. The picture is about to released end 2019 starring Will Farrell, Julia Louis Dreyfus, Kristofer Hivju and Miranda Otto among many others.

2018

In spring 2018 Thomas shot the fiction scenes for the documentary “Song of the unknown actress” in Los Angeles. Five women show what it really means to “follow your dreams” and demonstrate that happiness and success are not necessarily related. The film is directed by Berlin based directing duo Pet&Flo starring Chloe Farnworth, Nicole Coulon, Amanda Markowitz and Charlie Taylor.

2017

Thomas signed as DoP for his longtime companion and co-director Philipp Kadelbach on Philipp’s feature film „So viel Zeit“ for UFA Fiction. Alongside other highly acclaimed german actors the picture stars Jürgen Vogel, Jan-Josef Liefers, Armin Rohde and Ritchie Müller. The picture is announced to be released winter 2018

2014

For Autostadt’s „Panoramakino“ Thomas created a series of 5 Mini-biopics to be screened on one of the largest LED screen in Europe. The production employed a specially designed rig with 3 6K cameras to capture the seamless immersive 12K format.

2010 - 2013

Directing for Red Bull Media House, Thomas followed world class pro climber David Lama by successfully freeclimbing the norteast face of Cerro Torre. After 3 long years of production, the film set standards in action sports and aerial filmaking. “Cerro Torre - a snowballs change in hell” premiered at the San Sebastian Film Festival.
